Hello,

I just recently had the water well pump replaced for a new one. Now im having the issue that while taking a shower, the water begins to lower in pressure and then shuts off entirely. When this happened, I went outside to check the pump and the pressure gauge was reading zero and the pump was not kicking back on. After about 20 minutes, the pump turns on and the pressure gauge rises and reads normal pressure. My plumber isn’t sure what the problem is. What can cause the delay in activation? All help and advise is very much appreciated as I’ve just been through the rigger with problems with this pump for the last month.

The overload in the motor is tripping. They will automatically reset after they cool down and it seems like the water just magically comes back on. Low voltage can cause that. Also, running the well dry or the pump is cycling on and off too rapidly. But such a new pump should not trip because of cycling, it takes a year or two of wear from cycling before that usually happens.

If it happens again, it would be interesting to read the voltage heading to the pump in that state. If a 230 volt pump, there should be 240 volts across terminals 2 and 3 of the pressure switch if the pump is wired as most common. If not 240 v or so, could be a clogged nipple to the pressure switch or a gummed up pressure switch. You said new pump, and did not say new switch.

If the pressure is normal and the pump should be off, expect about zero volts.
