Our rural home in Missouri was built in 1971 or 72. We have approximately 500ft of water line to city's main line and developed a leak about 120ft from city line. Question is: what is your best guess as to what type of line it is and can it be mended vs replacing? (Runs through neighbor's yard, trees and under their septic line.)

Find the leak are...a good sign is a puddle around it.

Carefully dig enough to expose the pipe, take a picture and post it here.

Any concerns about a potable supply line being under a septic waste line underground? If they both develop leaks decades later it could be a health issue, no?

The water line would be under pressure so it would flow INTO the septic tank line and as long as you did not drink the septic tank water there would be no health issue.

Unless you are looking at replacing the entire line, it's a good idea to look at hiring a leak detection company. They often can spot it within inches or feet using sound.
Choices back then might have been PVC or Poly.

That path sounds odd.

Is the leak before or after your water meter?

Is the leak in your neighbor's yard?

I wonder if the leak was caused by digging and work in your neighbor's yard. Did their septic go in after your water line?

That leak finding company idea sounds really nice.

The original line also may be copper. What does the line look like at the point that you can first see it?
