I have an olds style single handle Moen shower handle, I took out the cartridge and this is what it looks like. Went to Home Depot and bought a 1225 Moen cartridge and the plastic piece that goes onto the brass rod is too large to fit in the hole where it originally goes. Seems weird the part that I took out my shower nothing controls the end piece of it.

it is a moen 1225 but I think you have part of the cartridge lower section still in the valve body. The remaining part has to be pulled out.

It might be an urban legend, but I heard that "Moen" is a Norwegian word for "persistent drip"..
