Drain for water softener

Hi all,

I'm in the process installing a water softener myself on a pre-plumbed area with an existing softener loop, outlet, and capped drain, on what appears to be a drain stack.

My question: do I need to make a P trap for the drain connection or is the required air gap enough? Also, any tips for removing the cap?

No trap needed, unless you are connecting to the sewer/septic system.

Not sure. It is concealed behind the wall. Assumed it's for the specific purpose of draining for softener, since it's with the softener loop. Area is directly below laundry room, so I'm wondering if the drain is on the existing laundry stack.
