Just installed a brand new bathroom vanity with sink (overflow at front edge), faucet and metal pop-up drain (upgraded from the plastic pop-up that came with faucet due to 2 lousy gaskets) which is otherwise very similar to the factory pop-up. The metal pop-up has 5 good gaskets so no leaks after teflon taping the drain threads (yay!). Faucet water drains well except for when you run it on high and engage the pop-up so that water fills the sink 1/3 or more of the way up. I cannot figure out why the pop-up drain drains so slowly for larger sinkfulls of water ... and if that can be rectified. Not a huge deal for me but if I get a boyfriend, he may want to shave in that sink.

I read that surface tension builds up in these pop-drains because of the smaller grids under the pop-up where the water flows through. Fyi, pop-up is aligned perfectly with overflow cutouts at 12 o'clock & 6 o'clock. Definitely no clogs in the line through to the waste line. Any ideas on how to get pop-up to drain at normal rate even after puposefully filling the sink? Thank you in advance for your expertise.

Im having the same experience. All new plumbing, so there’s no chance it’s a clogged drain.

Drains just fine until a certain flow rate is hit then it starts acting clogged.
I hear a gurgling from past the p trap and the pipes(wall is currently exposed). But no bubbles coming up from the sink drain.

I found that engaging the drain closed then open again causes it to start draining again.

Any luck resolving your situation?

If your new pop-up drain is slow when the sink is filled more than a third, check that the drain is the right size and properly aligned. Adjusting the angle of the pop-up might help with surface tension slowing down the water. Also, make sure the drain line is vented and look for any debris in the P-trap. If it still drains slowly, you might want to get a larger drain and pop-up or ask a plumber for help.

Are these lavatories vessel sinks or other sink with no overflow?

One troubleshooting technique is to push a soda straw through a drain hole, and see if that air passage makes things go a lot more smoothly.

Another thing is that the "water seal" must be between 2 inches and 4 inches. Some traps are reversible, and can be either. If your trap is set for a 4 inch water seal, reversing the trap can make a 2-inch water seal. If you make that switch, you must shorten the tailpiece or tailpiece extender.

I returned the pop up drain and went with a grate style. This addressed it for me, I don’t really need to plug the drain.
It is a vessel sink without overflow.

I tried attaching a photo but I keep getting “file too large …” problems

The pop up needs to be raised. Adjusting the linkage to allow the pop up to pop up farther will let it drain faster.
