Hi all,

Dealing with a heck of a challenge on a Pfister single-handle shower valve and cartridge replacement.

Went to replace the cartridge after about 15 years of use. Pfister had sent me a replacement supposed to fit the original valve (received in early 2024).

First issue I had was getting the handle off...that's a whole other story.

Second issue is with respect to the valve body itself. You can see from one of the attachments that there is some erosion on the cold side opening where the D-shaped o-ring sits. When I took out the old valve, the o-ring and the plastic channel in which it fits were deformed.

Thoughts on whether or not this will operate ok once I replace the cartridge?

Third issue is with the Pfister replacement cartridges. They had sent me part 974-042 (or 974-0420, gray one pictured) which has the same general shape and mounting configuration, but is a one-piece versus the two-piece cartridge I pulled out. When I went to put this in, it didn't quite fit; the external sealing o-ring didn't fully mate with the valve body. I didn't want to push it too hard, or drive it in with the screws, because I was concerned it was the wrong part. Called them, and they said this part is obsolete, and they are now sending me 974-5319 (black one pictured).

Does anyone have a good understanding of the Pfister replacement cartridges to be able to provide some guidance? Are these all the same, and do they replace the two-piece valve stem and pressure balancing cartridge I have? Any reason i couldn't get the gray one to fit properly? Looking around the internet, I've noticed some valves with D-shaped seals on the inlets, some with O-shaped seals, two piece, one piece... I've seen mention of 0X8 valve "deep castings", etc. It's very confusing. Just want to try to identify the correct replacement so I can look for it locally to get this back up-and-running.

Thanks!

For those who come across this in the future, 974-5319 was the correct part number. In the picture below, there is a white adapter piece on the end of this part which has the D-shaped o-rings, which can be removed for a valve with the O-shaped ones. I believe this allows for backwards compatibility with multiple style valves.

It didn't go in as easily as the one which came out, probably because the sealing o-ring is brand new. Needed a bit of a push to get the o-ring to seat. I thought I had the wrong part again, because this is the same issue I was having with the gray one (974-042). I suspect the gray one might have actually worked fine as well if I gave it the same push.
