I am planning on putting in Motion activated switches in my kitchen and garage. This is in Florida, just in case it matters.

In the kitchen, the switch is connected to a ceiling fan with 3 lamp fixture (currently all LED bulbs). What should be current rating for the switch? I also want to make it idiot proof it by providing enough rating just in case somebody puts in incandescent bulbs in the future.

In the garage, the switch is connected to a ceiling fan with 2 lamp fixture (currently all LED bulbs) and a fluorescent shop lamp. What should be the current rating of this switch? Again want to idiot proof it.

Thanks for any inputs.

They make them with wiring with or without the neutral wire. 5 amp is the highest amperage unless using a commercial 800 watt $$$. Incandescent bulbs are hard to find. Motors are inductive loads. Motors.pull their most amps/ watts from a dead start ( lock rotor amps) switch needs to handle that current.

Might want to think about a push button timer just for the fan or both. They come in all different times ranges.

I think I will leave them as they are. Not worth having the risk of inadequate capacity switch which could result in fire.

Thanks for the inputs.

Good suggestion by fitter30
One thing to keep in mind if you do go the route of a push button timer or any electronic timer. You need to make sure that the timer you purchase is rated for a fan load. Not all timers are and the fan will not operate correctly otherwise. The one that fitter30 suggests is fan rated.

The timer suggested by fitter30 has a current rating of 15A and wattage of 1000W.

This Leviton switch also has a 15A resistive rating but includes a 1/2 HP motor. Would this work?. Unfortunately I dont have the rating of the motor of the fan in kitchen.
