Hey all, I just reseated our upstairs toilet after raising the flange with some spacer rings, and it appears to have worked alright: no smell and no visible leaks. It's been flushed maybe 3 times since being reinstalled, I had the bathroom doors alls closed for several hours to make sure I couldn't detect any nasty scents.
However, my wife and I both independently noticed something we don't remember hearing before: when we use the downstairs toilet (directly underneath the other) before flushing, we can hear what sounds like trickling water in the wall pipes from upstairs. It sounds like it corresponds with whatever is going into the downstairs bowl and stops shortly after whoever is using the bathroom is finished. We did not notice any unusual sounds during and after flushing.
I recognize that anytime you add anything to the toilet bowl, a little water is pushed into the drain pipe due to displacement, but is there any reason why it sounds like there's water coming from upstairs when it should be coming from the downstairs pipes? Is it echoing somehow? Again, the upstairs toilet was just barely reseated, and both of us immediately flagged this as new. Could it be it was that way before, and we're just sensitive to it now because we're watching for issues with the new toilet, or could I have botched something with the reinstallation?
Sorry for the word wall, but thanks in advance!
EDIT: After some more reading, could it be a venting issue, and I'm getting a vacuum effect and pulling water from the upstairs toilet? Is it possible the old seal wasn't airtight and was allowing some air to vent, and now I've got trapped air? I'm not sure how I could go about fixing that if that's the case.
