stuff called oakum like hemp rope was packed in the joint followed by molten lead and packed some more. . lead is treated pretty seriously today grinding it making dust not a great idea itll be on everything your clothes breathing it etc sawing it might be unadvizeable. sharper chisel maybe or burn it out

sometimes I forget to think of the junk we are surrounded by in or minimize it. it might be late but still we should take precaution

I hear you, my belly started corroding and disappearing while I was in the dirt down there lol! I’m going to open a weight loss center soon. Seriously, I’m going to look into why the dirt corrodes conduit and cable tv connectors that sit in it - my guess is that the dirt has enough metal in it to create a current and make it corrode.

Anyways, I’ve been wearing my respirator mask down there as I’d be in terrible shape if I didn’t. I’m all bruised up though, gonna need to pad up like the Michelin marshmallow man next time.
