clogged drop-in buffet style heater

Forgive my lack of terminology, I am only just starting to get into DIY repair.

attached here I've drawn a diagram of the problem

my plan is to first run a 25ft auger through the drain. however I suspect that the problem might be a little bigger than a simple blockage.

in that case, I'd have to check out the valve.

the valve handle came loose, however before it did, the valve was leaking right at the tee when draining the water.

is there anything I should be prepared for?
