I am trying to replace the drain to a bathroom sink and the sink has an overflow hole. The sink did not have secondary path for the overflow water so the hole was connected to a hose that was then connected to the ball rod port of the drain, sacrificing the use of the pull up rod and stopper. Is this a common installation? How else could the overflow hole be drained if the sink vessel does not provide the pathway? Thanks in advance.

I can send pics but they were too large to upload.

NOT a common installation, as described. Sink overflow is normally cast into lav sinks and then the drain used has built in portion, so secondary hose is not used.
Some sinks have a externally piped overflow that go into a hockey puck shaped adapter
