We are in the middle of installing a new tub. The tub install required a new tub/shower valve height. It is about 10.5" higher up than the old install to make room for the new taller tub. The hot and cold line come straight from the basement, and feed this bathroom, and an adjacent bathroom. After installing the new valve, and turning the water back on, we are noticing a thumping noise coming from the hot water line when the sink faucet was turned on in the adjacent bathroom.
When installing the valve, we cut the existing lines going to the old valve, soldered elbows on them to direct the water up to the new valve location. No other modifications have been made.
The shower valve in the other bathroom is above this new tub/shower valve, and there are air chambers above that (about 20" of 3/4" pipe extending above the shower valve). Basically the main lines from the basement are 3/4" lines, and they have caps soldered on top of them.
We have turned off the house water, drained all of lines, and turned the water supply back on. We then turned on both hot and cold water at each faucet starting with the stuff closest to the main water supply, and working our way up. After about 4 on and off pulls from the adjacent sink (hot water only) the main hot water line near the new valve thumps.
What do you suppose is going on, and how do we fix it? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Attached is a picture of the new valve for reference, and I can provide any sort of drawings if that helps solve it.
Thank you
