Good afternoon, new here and already love all the info. I am building 2 off grid homes on my property and have a question on were to position my water storage tank. I am going to be drilling a well in a year from now but would like to put my storage tank in and run water to my jobsites while I am building. I don't want to have to move the tank later so trying to plan everything out. What I want to end up doing is have a well at 1480' elevation, one home at 1520' elevation and the other home at 1530' elevation. both homes are about 250' away from the well in separate directions. I can put the storage tank anywhere on my land and the elevation of it can be above both homes. What I don't know is if I should put the storage tank next to the well and then have 2 booster pumps that pump the water uphill to each house; or, if I should have the well pump pump the water an additional 250' away and 60' above to a storage tank above both houses and use gravity to feed both homes. Another factor is the pump or pumps will be running off of solar and batteries. Assuming I can have as many storage tanks and pumps as I need, I am looking for the most efficient approach. Thank you all for the help in advance, Ryan.

60' elevation is only 25 PSI. That is not much but better than nothing when the power is off. I would put the tank up on the hill and have gravity work for me. You will still need a booster pump or two. You could boost from the tank to both houses, or have a booster pump at each house as it would have 25 PSI feed on the inlet.

Thanks so much for the response. Do you think running the addition 250' of pipe and having the well pump pump the water up an addition 100' elevation gain only to get 25psi from gravity and to need booster pumps anyway would even be worth it? Or should I just plan on needing booster pumps and putting the tank next to the well. Thanks Ryan

I would love to have an elevated tank for emergency uses. But in Lubbock it is so flat you can see your dog running away for three days. Lol! But even if I had a mountain in my back yard I wouldn't have an elevated tank if it was going to be hard or expensive to install. If the well will make 10 GPM or more you don't even need a storage tank. Just run the pressure switch at 65/85 instead of 40/60. to make up for the 25 PSI loss up the hill. Same thing if it is a weak well and storage is needed, just set the tank near the well and use a 65/85 switch with the CSV set to maintain a strong constant 75 PSI, which will be 50 PSI at the house.

Yes I didn't think about the emergency upside. I live in Arizona desert so diffidently want a storage tank. Seems like its not that big of a deal to have the well pump down low pump the water the additional way up the mountain to the storage tank.
