Hello,

I am looking to replace my tub with a standing shower. I have a couple of questions. Can I replace the 30" wide tub with a 32" wide shower pan, or will this cause issues with the drain lining up? How complicated might the drain be to move?

Also, is there a problem with having the drain on one side (left) with the shower head on the other (right)? I do not want to move the drain that far, but would like to install a fixed half glass on the right hand side (which is next to the toilet) and leave the left open.

I am fairly new to plumbing issues, but aim to remodel this myself is possible.

There are shower pans made with the drain on the left or right that are meant to replace tubs. Which is probably what you're looking at. The drain would need to be modified no matter what to get lined up properly so choosing one with the drain closest to the existing is easiest.

While we generally have the drain closer to the location where the controls are, there is nothing Wrong with doing it the other way. You may want to try standing that way in your existing tub to get a feel for it. You would be standing uphill rather than downhill. It may be possible to change the drain location so that the drain was under the preferred control location too. That depends a lot on how much slope you have available and what the structure under the tub is. Slab on grade or wood framing make a big difference in how much work it takes.
