Upstairs the vents seem normal except for one which blows lots of air which is expected? being closer to the furnace . Downstairs the vent in the den has excessive air flow and the other rooms have very little air and never really heat up. As far as I know there there is no blockage or diverter that would cause the air to be directed in a certain direction. Curious what’s going on in here and any possible insight.

Depending on age of the system or when the home was built, some homes will have dampers to close off or reduce air flow to certain registers. Most homes will have a registers where you can close it off some to restrict air flow and allow more air to flow to other rooms. FYI, registers usually mean air from the air handler, grills are the returns to the air handler.

At least in Florida, to prevent stagnation of air flow for closed off rooms such as bedrooms, jump vents are installed which all it is a grill in the ceiling with duct work to another ceiling grill on the other side of the door, usually the bedroom hallway. Rooms that seem cold with the door closed is a lack of air flow from the register. To prove it with the door closed, feel for air moving under the closed door.

There are several ways to measure air flow with a tool to "balance" the system. Plenty of info on line on how to's.

Most runs from the trunk line to registers is round pipe. They make dampers for the pipe installed at the trunk line. Most main ducts rectangular ( trunk lines ) the run outs have a damper in them with a level to adjust. Lever or the shaft flats are the way the damper blade is positioned.

Pull your high-flow register, and look for adjustable louvers behind the front part that you can close down. The front control may not operate them as well as you would like. Move them manually, or maybe a little lube would let the front lever/wheel control better.

If the register does not close down enough, you can put some sheet metal behind the grill to block as much as you want.
