I see various measurements for "rough-in" what is that?
We have to replace a toilet and want to get the Toto UltraMax but don't know if it'll fit.
Can anyone explain, please? Thanks!
Sorry, I should have done a search first...I just found a description:
from back wall to bolts = rough-in.
Mine is 11 1/2 inches. So would an UltraMax work? It's 12" rough-in.
Probably close enough, right?
Generally, "rough in" refers to framing dimensions, before finish surfaces are installed. If the wall behind the toilet is drywall, typically 1/2" thick, that would mean the rough in dimension is 12".
In the case of toilets, the rough-in is measured from the finished wall to the center of the drain. The center of the drain is also the location of the flange bolts. Typically, a toilet can be installed where the rough-in is slightly less than the toilet is listed. I can state for certain that an Ultra Max will fit an 11-1/2 rough-in, but I think it will.
