I live in a very old farm house, built in the 1800's dirt floors in the basement. The plumbing is very old, so old if one person has a faucet running, pressure everywhere else drops. If you have the washer on(which trumps all other water) the shower trickles out, along with every other faucet in the house.

What is the cure? New piping? And what could this project cost?

At some point, all homes need repiping. Most plumbers bid by fixture. I have no idea how to tell you how much your home would be, as it depends on the local market, the inspections and how your home is laid out and how accessible it is to replacement.
A good job replaces every bit of pipe there is, leaving nothing behind. Any little bit will be trouble later on, and even harder to find.
All shower valves should be changed out to pressure balanced or thermostatic at this time. Pipe sizing needs to be brought up to current codes.
How about some pictures?
