Dry well....Where to put the storage tank?

We are presuming that you have a Grundfos 301 controller. That is going to be indoors. To send 230 directly to the pump, you would bypass the CU301 temporarily. However you would control the pump with the breaker for testing. If you took that CU301 out of the circuit forever, to fill a tank, you would use a float switch, and probably also that pump protection device.

It could be useful to use a clamp-around ammeter to measure the current when you turn on the pump, and see what happens as you approach the shutting down.

If you have to pry up the cover with a crow bar the CU301 box could be under there. But even without a control box the SQ motor has some protections that could be shutting it off just from the deep water level. Since that pump only makes 1 GPM at 750', the amps will be lower the same as if it had a Cycle Stop Valve on it making it pump only 1 GPM. The low amps maybe making the pump think the well is dry and shutting off the motor. However, I haven't had this problem when using an SQ with a Cycle Stop Valve. An amp meter would tell you if the pump has been shut off or if it is still running and just out of water.

you guys were right! It's the programing of the pump. The dry run protection was kicking in. Phew!

There really are no adjustments to the CU301 box other than set pressure. If the CU301 box is causing the problem the SQ pump will run fine without it. You can use a Cycle Sensor to protect the pump from running dry as it has adjustments for how long before the pump comes back on. If you don't have a cistern and are using the CU301 box to get constant pressure to the house, the CU301 can be replaced with a PK1A and the CU301 won't be giving you any more problems.
