Jumping R and W will start furnace normally. What can be jumpered to start furnace in second stage.

Two stage furnace will also have W2. Jumpering R and W2 should engage second stage.
However, you need to confirm the furnace settings, because it's possible the furnace could be configured via dip switches to either: 1) always run in stage 2, or 2) engage stage 2 based on run time (for use with a single-stage thermostat)

Also check the.programming of the stat for two stage.

Thermostats are not automatically setup for 2 stage?

Most if not all electronic thermostats from the inexpensive to high end have to be set up. Electric or gas heat, heat pump, compressor time delay and cycle rate based on type of heating system.
