Salty Water

Our home water softener system was replaced two months ago through a home warranty due to a leak. The plumber did not record the settings from the old unit and the only instructions they left were part of the OEM setup booklet. When I called, they said that all they do is installation and they did not know what the settings for the new unit should be, which suggests that it may have been left as factory default. And they said that we should contact the manufacturer or a water quality specialist to fix the situation. Not helpful.

For the first month, we added only a single bag of salt at a time and it seemed to work, but looking back it's hard to say if it really did. A few weeks ago we filled the salt tank halfway for the first time. The house water is now salty - it can be smelled and tasted in the air when the showers or sinks run, and my hair and skin feel dried out.

I'm not sure how to approach this. My first thought is to at least ensure the water softener settings are correct and then run a regen cycle, but after reading various posts I am even more confused than I was before. It is an Ultima-WS1 system, which seems to be the same as a Clack. It is a 32K grain system. We are on city water in Phoenix where the latest water quality report (2022) says that the Total Hardness is 10.9 - 16.2 for the city, but I can not find specific information on Iron or Manganese nor does it break down what parts of the city are high or low. The household is only two adults.

As far as I can tell, it is currently set to 24K capacity, 9.5 lbs of salt, and 20 hardness.

Please help if you can. I welcome any advice about what steps to take to troubleshoot this problem. Thank you.
