Does a reduced port ball valve have much if any effect on flow?
My understanding is that the port reduction has an effect on water, but no so much on gas. Is this correct?
I can’t find anything regarding this in the National code, and when my local gas company made the connection between my 3/4” riser/regulator and my 3/4”entrance line they pieced in a 1/2” shutoff.
Thanks

If its one pipe size smaller I doubt its an issue. I see that kind of stuff frequently my opinion it looks shoddy to cheap out on a 3/4 valve with 1/2inch then what bell reducers or bushings ? how do i justify that ? but its outside and works fine i guess why complain must be a small gas system with only 3/4 I know LP dosent need as big a pipe as natural

Every valve has a pressure drop Cv valve flow coefficient. What a valve flows in gpm 60° water with 1 lb pressure drop. If piping system is borderline size by pipe size or length. If that's the case full port. If you look at the equipment the gas valve are smaller the the supply pipe size so you can downsize the valve. 30' of 3/4" nat gas pipe ( add 5' per ell) is good for 129,000 btu's 3.5" at burner 7" supply.
