This is what I determined is the best thing to do, to prevent slow drains (PDFs on my Google Docs):

I make a solution of lye - I learned how to do this from soap making:

An initial, good cleaning with lye, Tub and Sink Shrooms in place, then, you can use less hazardous, enzymatic cleaners.

This is my post / questions on the Tub and Sink Shrooms / How to cap the Pivot Nut . . . https://terrylove.com/forums/index....p-cap-pivot-hole-tubshroom-lift-bucket.85422/

Good video link in here of where stuff accumulates, that creates a slow drain:

The only thing I wonder about today, is:

1.) Lye vs. Sulfuric acid . . . base vs. acid . . . Is there a dramatic temperature difference between the two? My impression is that acid runs hotter.

2.) Could the temperature that lye goes to, be dependent on what it's dissolving in your pipes? Apparently, it can get hot, but I don't see that when making a solution of it.

3.) If you don't leave the lye solution in your P-Trap for more than 30 minutes, is that the logic behind that it won't deteriorate the glue holding your pipes together?

You can cause more problems with acid and lye than old fashioned snaking the lines. One little splash and you can burn an eye out or overcome by fumes. When I lived in Schenectady, NY from 1977-1979, a guy died cleaning his toilet with chemicals. The fireman responded trying to resuscitate him with at the time 'mouth to mouth' and had his lips burned from the residue on the victim's face. The homeowner never recovered. DO NOT use these remedies.

Assuming your pipe is clogged and it is 20 feet long. You loosen the crud with acid or lye but only the first few feet. If crud does loosen up, it will further plug the pipe down stream since the pipe inside diameter is too small with crud and rust. With enough chemicals you can burn through the pipe depending on type, the amount of corrosion and age.
