Pilot would not hold, then I held pilot down and tapped gas valve. Pilot then held for 15 minutes. This fireplace has a combo thermocouple and thermopile. Bad gas valve?

Thermopiles have a voltage of 600 to 850 mv. To check voltage might take two people one to hold pilot down one to check the voltage. Make sure the pilot flame looks good and the electrical connections clean and tight. Pilot assembly should have some numbers on it and can purchase them with pezso off of ebay or amazon.
