For some reason the cold water line-in to the washing machine has decided to get noisy; a couple of days ago it was just a bang-thump every couple of minutes when the washer was running, now it's moved to chattering non-stop (guess it's got the chills...); did the water-main-shutoff-open-everything-open-water-main business a couple of times - no solution; added a hammer arrest device at the washer intake; still chatters. Curious is that no cold water comes into the washer drum; I turn it "off" and then "on" again, which causes a minute bit of water to come in and then the "chunk" and it shuts off; hot water works fine.

Is this an intake valve or some such issue within the machine itself?

Many thanks for any help.

Have you tried disconnecting the hose and running water into a bucket? There are inlet screens on the washing machine solenoid valve that can become plugged with debris. Take the hose off & look into the inlet.
