Dissolved AKA clear water iron AKA ferrous iron converts to ferric when exposed to an oxidant such as air. A water softener can remove a small amount but for larger concentrations, it should first be converted to ferric and mechanically filtered out. A test should be done to determine how much is in the water before prescribing treatment.
