Cap-Gun Sound from Water Heater

A friend reports a cap-gun sound from his natural gas water heater. It is only 1.5 yrs old. It is not the calcium build-up sound of rumbling. He describes it as a quick sound and he has heard it approx. 6 times now. Does this "sound familiar" to anyone?
