Tub P-Trap

Terry or anybody who knows,

Can I locate a tub p-trap 12 inches down stream from the vertical drain pipe of the tub instead of directly under the vertical pipe? I'm facing space issues.

Most inspectors would reject it, and it will cause drain, and cleaning, problems some time in the future.
