on well water... rearranging furnance area and need to re-position the water meter from a horizontal position (neer floor) to vertical position (parallel to wall)... any potential problems with the water meter being in a vertical position...?

You will want the meter in the horizontal position. Look for the size of the meter and spread and see if you can purchase a Meter Horn from a local (Plumbing supply store) Meters are labled 1-4. Make sure you put a full flow ball valve before and after meter.

Only problem is that most manufacturers don't certify the accuracy of meter in the vertical flow position. If some water utility is collecting money based on the meter they won't want you changing it, which usually involves breaking the seal.

There is an assembly called a "meter horn" or "meter resetter" that allows the meter to be installed horizontally in a vertical pipe run. Most utilities have them or you can buy one from USABLUEBOOK. https://usabluebook-onramp.com/cgi-...gm=unixgrep.bbx&itemdesc=meter+resetter&class=

There is also one called a meter insetter.

The horizontal requirement for water meters is really only for single-jet or multi-jet meters. It's just how the meter works with a spinning carousel that sort of 'floats' in the flow stream there is no rigid axle. The accuracy will suffer and the meter's internal parts will wear more quickly. There are, hjowever, meters that can be installed vertically and even have AWWA and NTEP approval to do so. They are positive displacement meters that use a completely different technology to measure the water. There are 2 main types - nutating disc and oscillating piston.

3 examples that I have used are:
T10 from Neptune
ME-PD from M&E
D10 from Assured Automation

But Bob NH has the right idea about the meter setter, re-setter, or "horn" which are available for purchase but can also be made from a bunch of fittings. This will give more flexibility if needed in very tight spots. just make sure that the meter doesn't require any amount of straight pipe before and after.
