I am not certain of the precise response, but the well caseing would be approx 4-6 inch diameter. If the caseing is not lifted, only that amount of opening will allow water to flow into the draw pipe through the sand point. When the caseing is pulled up to expose the sand point to the most flow, the sand will form around the point and all of the sand point screen will be available to flow water to the draw pipe. Sand is a much better water flow median than a solid steel caseing.

In the pipe it won't produce any water because the sand will cave in below the screen up into the pipe. Remember there is artesian pressure down there. Pull on the water and more will try to take it's place. Then you have a giant plug in the bottom of your casing below the screen. The sand around the screen is the preferred method.
