You have a first generation of Kohler Rite-Temp 304 valve. This can be easily updated to become a modern valve taking modern trim. First note your cap assembly has a single ribbed spindle. This shows you can add a pressure balance module required by todays codes. In the following instructions you will need GP876851 cartridge kit. As for new trim make sure it says it will fit the 304 valve or the 304/8304 valves

I recall finding an old shower valve like this and seeing how similar it was to the newer 304 valve. Thanks for that bit of info on retrofitting.
