The second floor shower drain started leaking, so I decided to take off the screen and look at it. It did not look like any of the modern drains I’ve seen online as you can see on the picture. I could not find the compression ring and it’s all copper piping and after I cleaned it off the best I could there’s something between the copper pipe and the brass sleeve.Im hoping someone can tell me what it is and how to remove it

You'd have to cut out ceiling from below and observe the exact leak location. If the mounted flange is leaking it might just need tightening with a big channel lock pliers. If the copper tube is lead caulked, and the leak source, a pounding in of the lead could stop a leak. We use "lead" caulking irons /similar to chisel but blunt face.
