I have a Takagi TK-Jr that appears to be nearing the end of its life (put in service in 2008). It drips green condensate from the exhaust drain after I clean the heat exchanger.

Is there any reason I can't swap it out with a condensing unit? Any brand recommendations? I'd like to get the tax credit.

We use Navien and they appear to be the leader. You just need a drain for a condensing unit. Navien does make non condensing units also.

We too use only Navien. We like the NPE A models because of the internal mini tank which is kept hot so there is no delay waiting for the coils to heat.
That said, Navien has a terrible problem with the internal check valve on past, and now the improved V2 models. It is a cheap and very easy part to replace, but, we are getting sticking check valves after even three months. Navien does cover some labor for the first year...but not easily. And, we've had two control boards go bad in under six months.
And Navien is not friendly to homeowners...the tech dept doesn't want to speak with homeowners.
So maybe Noritz would be my next choice if I was not mostly-retired
