Hi,
I have a 300+/- ft well that supplies 3 homes. It was drilled in 2006 and has all of the original equipment. Lately we have noticed a distinct drop off in water pressure. After a cursory inspection I found that the gauge was no longer working. I have replaced the pressure switch (40-60psi) and pressure gauge and verified that the pressure tank bladder is intact. The pump only seems to be able to pump up to about 25-30 psi, so in short, it stays on 24/7 since it's not even reaching the cut-on pressure of the switch. I'm guessing the pump needs to be replaced at this point.

My question is, what brand of pump would be good for this? I cannot afford a $1k pump right now as I was laid off in Nov of last year. Are the pumps that I'm seeing in the $200-$400 range any good? I know they may not last as long as some but if they'll give me 3-5 years of use it would be ok with me.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Brett

The short answer....no. You are not going to get a 1+ hp pump for that price that is any good. Pulling a 300' well pump isn't exactly a diy job anyway. If you lose that thing down the hole you will be in big trouble. If you pay a driller to put a crap pump in and it goes bad in a year you have to pay for another pump and more labor. Throwing good money after bad is no fun.

You need to only run that pump when you are using water. Letting it run like that when no water is being used can heat up the water in the aquifer, destroy the pump, and maybe even the well. Sounds like you may have a hole in the pipe down the well. You may not need a new pump yet. But if you let it keep running when no water is being used it won't last long. If it is 300' and you need a pump man to do the work, talk with them as some will let you pay it out over time if needed.
