How to connect to this bathtub drainpipe?

I dug about 20" down and can't find a turn or anything. Is there a P-trap down there somewhere?

Do I need to add a P-trap? What do I need to do to connect a PVC pipe from a new tub?

1975 home in Florida.

Stick a broom handle down it or anything like that. It will tell you how deep it is

If you do NOT have a trap, you have to add one, (properly installed of course), but if you do have one you CANNOT add another one.

If you shine a light down the riser you should see the water at the bottom if there is a trap.
