I'm working on a project with a pro plumber and a contractor. It was necessary to run a 4 inch cast Iron pipes through a joist bay. The plumbing made brackets out of 2x4s and plywood screwed together, and mounted them across the joists to support the pipe. The joist are generally 3x8s. Plumber claimed with the required pitch, there was not enough room to install a metal bracket on the side of the joist, and on the bottom of the joist it would drop the ceiling height. The contractor thought the support should be metal.

We could run a piece of blocking between the joists and install a metal hanger, but logically it would not be any stronger than resting the pipe on a wooden bracket, since the metal would be hanging from such a structure anyway.

What's the right way to support cast iron in a joist bay?

Thanks!

So you cut a 5" hole thru a 2x8? If so....that's wrong in every way.

The purpose of a pipe support is to, well, just support the pipe. It can be made of anything that does the job.
Wood, metal, plastic, are all good. Some particular situations have to meet fire resistance codes, and will be
more restrictive. If a method is not up to par, the plumbing inspector will likely say something about it.

Cool, thanks. The plumber will probably self inspect, so a bigger concern is whether it will stay in place. Weirdly, in NYC the code is very strict, but self inspection is common.
