The pipe sticking out furthest seems like steel and is same size as the drain line that came with the simple p trap I bought. What's my best move now?
A magnet is attracted to steel, and copper/brass is not.

Any thoughts on the hex? Could that be part of a steel santee?

Is that a hex? If so, I wonder what that might indicate.

A HEX is possibly a Bushing

There is no way to hook up a tubular trap directly to a threaded bushing. I think we are looking at lead and will either need to use a SJ coupling or rip open the wall and turn it into a larger project in order to make the connection.

Why not just place a nipple in the bushing and then use an SJ Nut and place the tubular trap discharge into the nipple?

A nipple in the bushing would work if it is a bushing, but I don't think it is. If it was scratched with something sharp it should be easy to tell if it is lead. I think the original trap was wiped onto lead.
