My outdoor hose bib is missing the packing nut and handle. It has a square-ish cast body and has BUCKEYE stamped on both sides. It's one of those kinds that shouldn't bust and freeze. No vacuum breaker. Looks kind of old. House is 83 years old. Where can I find parts? Local hardware said to remove it and bring it in. I told him if I did that I'd just buy one ;)

I use pliers to turn it on and off, but it leaks quite a bit when on. There is a large nut around the stem (which I assume is to remove the stem) and then threads on that nut for another nut--which I assume is the packing nut.

Thx
Jason

PS Think the manufacturer was an Ohio State fan? Go Bucks!

If it is accessable I would just replace it.

Ya? :( Maybe someone else will chime in or I guess I'll have to.

I doubt that the valve is 83 years old, but it sounds like this thing has served well for a long time and is due for replacement. It is screwed into a fitting inside the house, and you must hold the supply side when you apply force to unscrew it or you'll surely twist the supply line :( Sometimes this are hard as hell to access, but that's what has to be done. I wouldn't mess with trying to patch the old one, you'll spend time and money and it still may not work.
