I am having granite put in and a new undermount sink. The problem i am having is the clearance between the aav and the bottom of the sink. Is it feasible to reduce the 2 inch pipe to 1.5 or 1.25 with the aav or move the aav horizontalout of the way about 15 inch and up to the normal distance IMAG0104.jpg? Local coding allows an aav.

The AAV can be moved to the left or the right, but looking at your picture it appears that the drain is not installed properly in the wall.

Most AAVs are designed to work on either 1.5 or 2" pipes and come with the stuff to make it fit. You may have thrown away the originally unused parts.

The AAV, as I understand it, like any vent, should not have a horizontal section before it has risen above the flood plane of the trap it is servicing, so, no, don't think you can go horizontal with it. They might allow it going up at an angle (say maybe a 45-degree?), but a pro would likely know for sure (as would probably the instruction sheet for the thing).

photo.jpgThis was a new home when I purchased it from the builder about 2005. I have never had an issue with draining, but it could be off. I can't see the main pipe because it is buried behind cement, so I don't know if it was tee off in 2 sections or what. The aav is about 3 inches above the clearance I need. I thought the more logical thing was to go horizontal and maybe slope it up. I think this particular aav only has a 15 degree play that will maintain functionality.

The problem that exists is if the drain ever backs up even a little bit, solids will stay in the horizontal run and there is no flow through the pipe to wash it out. I have also seen where using a garbage disposal caused liquids/solids to push into the line and diaphram of the AAV, causing it to fail.

Plug the two lines you won't be using for the kitchen drain. On the remaining line put a sanitary tee before the trap. Install your AAV on the branch of the tee as high as possible.

i cut the aav pipe to remove the elbow and if i look in the pipe i see another 90 degree elbow going down. I can assume that it connects to the other two drain pipes. I have no idea why i have three drain pipes, and i wish i can do away with two of them - but not have to tear down the wall - as they take up way too much space inside my cabinet. could I just seal off the bottom and top drain pipes and just use the middle one to control my two sinks and disposer? how can i implement that with the aav? i think there is about 5 inches of pipe between where i can see them and where i can't.

the top pipe is 2"
the bottom are 1.5"

Cut off the AAV pipe and look inside it to see if there is a tee or elbow inside the wall. Having THREE outlets under the sink is very unusual.

i live in Miami - nothing really unusual. Even from a newer (2005) builder built home.

Ok. I have decided to seal off the bottom connection and top vent with a screw on instead of weld - just in case. I will connect my disposer and dw to my left sink and connect it to the right sink. On the right I will have my 1.5 p trap to the middle drain witha sanitary tee with the aav on it as high as possible. I don't assume to have any issues with this setup and it will provide me with the clearance I need.
