PVC primer is definiely N O T what to use. It is a solvent to slightly melt the plastic and makes the solvent cement work better.

The primer for pipe wrap tape is used because the pipe might be oily and dirty. The primer ( which is yellow so the inspector can see you used it) preps the surface and provides a "tack" which will ensure the tape bonds well.
Yes, the primer costs more than a roll of tape, but you should use it.

Mark, when he says "gas tape" he is referring to the 20 mil black pipe wrap tape required ( around here anyway) on couplings, elbows, etc on underground steel pipe. The pipe itself is the green epoxy coated stuff.

jim this is not being used on iron pipe for gas. i,m in ca., it is customary for roofers to wrap storm collars at the top with this tape as a water seal.

on my own tar and gravel roofed house i have run up 3 short sections of grey elec conduit to add some lites in one of the rooms. i hot mopped in 3 new roof collars and need tape to seal the top. we do this often ,but i thought primed on 1st and last wrap might help with adhesion better, thank,s

Thanks for the follow up. I think the black pipe wrap tape is not the right product for your application. It is meant for underground use. I do not believe it will hold up under UV exposure. Today, however, there are a number of excellent tape products for such uses. None require a primer. Any good building material supplier, and even the depots, will have 2 or 3 products to choose from.
