I just replaced an old flapper that was allowing water to leak out of the tank slowly, until it triggered a "topping off" of the tank. The new flapper is identical and installed with the same length of chain, etc. But now it drops when only about a quarter of the water has drained from the tank. I read some comments about a similar problem from another diyer "Paul" - and his solution was to adjust a styrofoam or sponge thing on his flapper. My flapper doesn't have anything like that. I have lengthened the chain and I think (maybe) the flapper stays up a tiny bit longer(?), but just how long should the chain be, anyway? Any other advice on how to get a good flush without having to hold the handle down for the duration? Thanks, Avra

Keep adjusting the chain, both longer and shorter.

This is your problem. It should have a little slack in it. But ultimately there is always some trial and error involved, even for seasoned Robin Hood go-to guys like me.

What make of toilet?
What model of toilet?
Did you get an exact replacement flapper or a generic replacement?

No info on the make or model of toilet. It is probably at least 20 years old and came with the house. I looked for a name and year and could find neither....
The flapper is a Fluidmaster -EXACTLY the same in every way as the previous one, which was installed by a plumber about 3 years ago. It comes/came with a five year warranty - but oh well.....

Sounds like you put a 1.6 GPF flapper on a 3.5 GPF toilet.

In many cases a Korky® Plus Premium Universal Flapper p/n: 2001BP
Will work in this situation.

If you are hanging it on the hooks the ring must be cut off and not used!

I really hate those fluidmaster flappers.
Some of them the rubber turns to different "Time" settings. They are adjustable...
