Old house, not sure what rough-in size

I have a house built in 1928. A contractor friend, who worked on a similar house in my neighborhood, tells me I have a 10" rough in.

I measured from the bolt to the back of the thank, and it was about 11", so I suspect he's right.

However, behind the toilet there is a 4" gap to the wall. So does that mean I could actually get a 12" rough-in if I wanted? I'm not very smart about rough-ins.

Thanks! -Jeff

15" from the bolt to the baseboard. (15.5" to the wall.)

FYI-- 4" from the back of the tank to the wall. 9" from the base of the toilet to the wall.

A standard 12" rough is from the wall to the center of the drain.
Any 12" toilet will work there.
Or you can use something with a Unifit from Toto and pull it 2" closer to the wall with a 14" kit.

You have a 12" toilet on about a 15" rough, so you can use either a 12" or 14" toilet depending on how much space you are comfortable with behind the tank.

Thanks all so much! Yeah, this house was made in the 1928, and they didn't do anything standard back then. (The studs seem to be at erratic widths, for example.)

Now to decide what toilet I want! This opens up a whole new world of choices-- before I was trying to find a 10". This makes things so much easier. (My water dept gives a $195 rebate for watersense toilets!)

Toto is the benchmark in low flow toilets. You can see photos and read about the various models on Terry's Report on Low Flow Toilets which is linked from the home page of this forum.
