Engineering as diplomacy
BERNARD AMADEI
You cannot look into the eyes of a child who is dying from a disease caused by drinking dirty water -- something that rarely, if ever, happens in the United States -- and not feel changed. You cannot stand before her parents without thinking, "I'm an engineer. There must be something I can do."

a pretty inspiring story.
My take on it.

When I visited Belize on vacation years ago, I was struck with the poor water quality. Everywhere I looked, there was either very poor plumbing, no plumbing, or just bad plumbing.
When I asked how the local plumbers leaned their trade, they looked at me and said.
"He just looks at the house next door and copies it."
I looked, and of course, it was all plumbed wrong.
The whole Caye was plumbed wrong.
Nobody was drinking tap water, it all come in on the open boat from Belize City. It's not like water is that easy to transport either. It weighs a lot.
And then what do you do with the containers when they are empty?
They had no training, or books on the Islands, and I don't see much better on the mainland either.
They do have Internet access though.
In a land with few resources, and money, the Internet has become their library.
When the plumbers get a bit tough on homeowners on this site, it's because your neighbors plumbing will affect your water quality.
It's all on a shared piping and supply system.
In this country, it takes 6,000 hours of training to get a license.
The reason for that, it to protect your family, and the families on your block.
