I live in Phoenix and almost all the homes have no basements and no drains in the garage where most soft water systems are installed.
My question is can you drain the discharge water to the outside if the yard has rocks and no grass, I have heard of some people running to an outside cleanout and installing the drain there but then there is no air gap. Thanks in advance

First, I have a few questions. Are you on sewer or septic tank? Do you use sodium chloride or potassium chloride? Do you have experience with plumbing work?
Draining sodium chloride onto your ground will kill most plants it touches. Potassium chloride will actually make plants grow better. This volunteer Desert Willow actually popped up where my water softener drains. It loves the potassium.

Some communities bar water softeners that drain into sewer systems. Check your local codes. Concentrated chlorides aren't ideal for septic tanks, either.

If you can do basic plumbing, you can run a drain line to your closest drain (washing machine, sink, shower/tub, HVAC condensate drain, or most any other avenue where water leaves your home). Just make sure you maintain a proper slope (dropping 1/4" for every foot of pipe).

id go into the dwv system if i was on sewer septic id manage into an area with no vegitation
