What is the Best Water Softener?

I understand the upflow system is more efficient on salt consumption. Wondering how that is achieve.
The regeneration could be called counter-flow. The brine goes in the opposite direction from the normal flow. Hence the most sodium-laden resin is at the end of the flow. In downflow regeneration, you have to push enough salt in that the resin is regenerated all the way through to the bottom. With upflow regeneration you can use as little salt as you wish. In theory it allows for perfect salt efficiency.

In practice, this does not work as well as one might hope, especially if you do any backwash after regeneration: The precious layer of sodium-rich resin gets stirred up. But in general it works; I just wouldn't go out of my way to get an upflow regen head.

Piece what together?
Looks to me as if there are tanks, head, valves and salt buckets. Thread is implying to shop around for the best parets, and it lso seems no one makes ALL good parts, I asked if anyone pieced the perfect (or close to) system (parts selection) together?

I am settle for a new Clark WS1.25 valve this time with same 2.0 ft3 capacity to replace the old Fleck 7000 2.0 ft3 system. I do know my setting on the Fleck 7000 valve, but the Clark WS1.25 is something new to me. I am reading the user manual as now. The system will be install this Friday. Now, the question is the capacity. Do I program Clark WS valve as a 48k unit or leave it at 64k? I understand the salt setting 16lbs might be ideal, but if I prefer the "smooth" of water, can I up a few more lbs of salt?

Thanks,

You can do anything you wish on a Clack unit.... We have installed about 1000 of them since 2005 and I have only had about
a dozen of them give me troubles probably due to human error...

They are very simplistic if the unit is a 64k , then you should program it at 48k so you have some reserve
16 lbs of salt per regeneration is really heavy unless you have god awful hard well water
if you have around 20 parts hard water you can probably do around 13 lbs of salt and see how you like it

I looked this question up on this forum but surprisingly, I didn't find anything. There are a lot of articles online but it's hard to tell which is paid websites. I'm wondering what is the opinion here.

Can people tell me what they consider the best water softener to install?

Thanks.
Thank You. I come accross this post and get lot of opinions for my research sheet.

If anyone looking on it in 2026 then the best water softener system can be SoftPro Elite. I have done very deep research compare lot of companies, facts, data, hardness on different cities and then come to this point.

I am using it since 3 years and very happy.
