Well pump OFF and water still coming in

I am trying to replace my pressure tank and even though the well pump power is off at the breaker I am still getting a ton of water coming in and draining through the drain hose.

I’ve drained the pressure tank and shut off the valves to the house.

The water is a steady small stream coming out and it’s gurgling/bubbling in the pipes around the pressure tank.

I have tried finding a shut off valve for the well itself and do not see one anywhere. I’ve checked outside the house as well, but the line coming into the house is a black flex line that’s hooked to pipe and immediately into the pressure tank.

Am I missing something? I’ve already filled a 5 gallon bucket of extra water after killing the power!

If the pressure tank is the lowest device of your plumbing system, you’re draining the entire home. Open all faucets and it’ll drain faster. A lot of water is in those pipes.
A slight possibility is your water table is high and the hydrostatic pressure is pushing water past the pump. Another possibility is there is siphon causing water to flow from the well. It all depends on your water source and level which we do not know.

Depending on the size of the pressure tank, 5g may only be a small portion of the water stored in the tank.

If the flow is Artesian, a drain from the well casing a couple inches below the well cap may do the trick. But if that drain is still higher than the pipe in the house the flow will continue.

If you are replacing the pressure tank, it is probably because the tank failed. A failed 32 gallon tank could easily hold 25 gallons of water. You may have to drill a big hole thru the shell and diaphragm or bladder if pressurizing the tank with air from a CFM or SCFM-rated air compressor does not drive the water out.

So that is probably a more likely match than having the artesian well.
