Our municipal water department is replacing old brass water meters from the 1980s (I think they are Neptune) with new plastic Sensus iPERL meters. Recently, a relative had the utility come to perform this replacement on their house, which is equipped with a pressure reducing valve (25AUBZ3). Pressure before the meter is over 125psi. Pressure after the PRV is set to about 70psi and has been for years with no issues. Water line is 3/4" copper.

The person replacing the meter stated that the new Sensus meter doesn't have some sort of "filtering device" that the old meter did, and because of that, the screen on the PRV would clog and need to be cleaned often. He suggested removing the PRV and "dealing with" the 125+ psi pressure. I call BS. Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

Thanks for your help on this.

Wish I could help.
Is 125 psi not too high? Do even higher pressure transients occur? Would a PRV stop a static pressure transient from getting through?
Does the new meter have a filter and will notify if it needs cleaning?

(Our house built 2000. Our meter did not have a filter. Was replaced with a data transmitting meter and they gave the old meter to me.
Our PRV has a large hex cover opposite the pressure adjustment screw. Is that for a filter?)

Can just deal with 125 lbs. 60-70 for city water and is in design water pressure for most valves like clothes washers and dishwashers. Most prv have a screen the big nut on the bottom and most never need cleaning.
