Homeowner and plumbing newbie. I am installing a new vanity top, and the sink drain is in a different location than the old one. I'm having trouble figuring out the correct orientation for the p-trap. The old drain had this configuration:
However, this setup doesn't seem to be working for the new location. As you can see, the pipe extension and p trap are abutting and I'm not able to tighten everything without putting tension.
Ideally I wanted to find a solution that didn't involve messing with this ancient coupling coming out of the wall. However, I'm not sure if it's possible. (I'm not even sure exactly what I'm looking at with that setup out of the wall, to be honest.)
I'm afraid if I do manage to remove the elbow there and have a straight pipe coming out of the wall, The J bend will be just a tiny bit too short to reach it. Any advice much appreciated.
