Replacing 3.5gpf toilet that has cracked tank, does anyone know the best way to free the toilet and remove the thinset from drywall and floor?

I am not a pro.

I think I would remove bolts, don eye, hand and arm protection, and use a big hammer to the side of the toilet.

Lots of luck getting that up easily. You may be lucky. Thinset is never a good idea underneath a toilet. It could be plaster of paris, but that isn't much better but at least is softer. It's likely going to take something like a chisel and a hammer. If it's plaster of paris, you can dig it out with something hard and sharp.
