Hi everyone

Looking for advice. Just had a water softener and filter installed. Wanted to know what the recommended settings should be. I requested a backwashing filter for both the softener and filter. But the installer did mention that this is the first time he’s installed a backwash valve on the filter. He’s typically only done then on softeners. My installer set things up but wanted to double check that the settings were “optimized”. I’m new to the water treatment world so please forgive any silly, newbie type questions and comments.

I have a 2 cu ft tank for the filter (all catalytic carbon and I believe KDF 55 media) and 2 cu ft tank for the softener (believe that makes it 64,000 grains, with 10% crosslink resin). The tanks are size 12x54" for both. The valve is a clack valve for both and the controller is the i5 controller from impact water products. There is a sticker on the valve body that has v3001 on it - google tells me that’s a WS1 downflow valve. Injector size is E. DLFC GPM is 3.2.

I live in north San Diego county. City water. City uses chloramine. Hardness on the water report is roughly 14 and a test sent to Home Depot from sink water showed hardness of 10. So assuming somewhere in between is the real number. The filter is plumbed first and then the softener. We have a family of 6, 2 adults and 4 kids. We are using around 1500-2000 gallons a week according to my Flo monitor. So 250-300 gallons a day.

Also have a pool that was filled with hard water but was considering using soft water to top it off every few days. It’s a manual Fill line and is plumbed to the interior plumbing so it gets soft water. Usually requires 50-100 gallons every 3-4 days. I read that topping the pool with soft water is OK just not filling it all the way. If an absolute no no, I can bypass the units when topping off the pool.

Questions:
What should my settings be at for both of these units?
Also I read that my 12" tank should have the blue injector (F) instead of the white one (E) they I have now.

Your description is somewhat confusing, and so some clarification is needed.

While it would be straightforward to offer settings recommendations for a 2 cu ft (ft3) salt based softener and a 2 ft3 backwashing carbon filter, each utilizing a Clack WS1 control valve, but, you stated both units as being equipped with an Impact WP 'I5' controller.

The Impact website does not list an 'I5' controller, but does show 'I5' as a salt free water conditioning system. Although not a softener, the I5 is equipped with a magnetic element and media to condition the water to prevent scale formation, and also catalytic carbon for water filtration. The product page shows the I5 equipped with a Fleck backwashing control valve. (Link to Impact I5 system)

Although it is likely your equipment is not actually I5 but is a conventional salt based softener, preceded by a conventional backwashing catalytic carbon filter, you also mentioned KDF media as possibly being included within the backwashing carbon filter.

What leads you to believe KDF media is installed?

If KDF media is installed, I expect it will be KDF55, not KDF85, but clarification is needed.

If KDF media is utilized, does your invoice list a 'media guard' or similar description?

Post a low resolution photo showing the front of each WS1. There are various versions of WS1, so the button layout in a a good indicator to know which version manual to refer to for programming.

Sorry for not being clear.

You're right - the softener is conventional and salt based preceded by a conventional backwashing catalytic carbon filter.

From what I was told by my installer, the i5 controller is IWP's own control board on top of a Clack valve. It's the unit on page two of this PDF. Attached is a picture of my tank.

The invoice says KDF55 for the filter. But doesn't mention media guard. However, in speaking to the installer when he was here putting them in, he mentioned that there is a screen that prevents the media from getting out of the tanks. I'd imagine that is a media guard?

Thank you for your help!
