Repair or Replace Fill Valve on OLD Kohler Wellington (80's)

I have an old Kohler Wellington; narrow/tall tank, quite wonderfully 'mod' in all the right ways (matching pedestal sink 9see below, that's my color, too). Need to keep it running for a long time ahead! But the fill valve is running & won't stay 'stopped' when I wiggle the float anymore.

SO, a new Kohler all brass replacement is $150+...a fill-valve repair kit is like $45...and a new fluidmaster-type plastic, eazy-peazy setup is about $18. Are there valid reasons why I should, or MUST, stick with the old school valve (repair or replace?). Or do I stick with what I've done on old toilets for years...just get the fluidmaster (or maybe TOTO's version instead; is it 'better' than Fluidmaster?)?
